CAREER: Structure-property relationships arising from interfacial coupling in bi-phasic nanocompositesJennifer Andrew, University of Florida, DMR 1150665 Outcome: Researchers at the University of Florida have developed a new way to make composites on a single fiber, combining magnetic and dielectric behavior. Impact: Composites on a single fiber could potentially enable new electronic devices, ranging from dual-phase memory to tunable microelectronics. Explanation: Many material properties are mutually exclusive and therefore unlikely to be found in a single phase material. One example of such a property dichotomy is ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, which describe a materials ability to be polarized in an electric or magnetic field, respectively. Composite materials provide an attractive platform in order to obtain a ferroelectric ferromagnet. Such a material would allow the realizationof many new electronic devices. Professor Jennifer Andrew is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida.
