Boxing tradition • Is a tradition in his family. • Grandfather, Vicente, a 126-pound amateur in the 1940s, and his father 1940s Joel, Sr. • Oscar’s father boxes professionally in the 60’s.
Oscar’s boxing • At the age 6 Oscar started boxing. • He started boxing because he was bullied by other kids. • Started to go to the gym so he could learn to defend himself.
Weight Class • At age 15 Oscar won the National Junior Olympic weight class of 119 lbs. • Won National Golden Gloves title in 1990 for the 125 lbs. class
Weight Class • With his victory in the 1991 U.S. Amateur Boxing tournament at 132lb. He was named Boxer of the Year.
The Olympics • In 1992 Oscar trained for the Olympic games. • He trained in Barcelona, Spain • When Oscar won the Olympic gold medal he dedicated it to his mother who died in 1990 of Breast Cancer.
