  1. CJ 110 Professor Brown

  2. Unit 9 Final Project • Prepare a crime alert bulletin for patrol officers pertaining to the incident described below. You will entitle the bulletin Extra Surveillance. • Ask officers to attempt to locate and/or identify the offending vehicle and report any information about possible suspects back to your office or to the detective in charge of the case (you can make one up). • You would of course need to include your identifying information such as title, phone number, and email address (you can make these items up). Be creative but succinct; officers like concise information in an easy-to-read format.

  3. Unit 8: Administrative Analysis The main purpose of this unit is to familiarize you with work products that an administrative analyst will prepare. You have learned about the analyses that would be used to create these reports, but this unit will focus on understanding what these statistics mean, by definition and concept. Whether you’re employed as a strategic or tactical analyst, odds are that administrative analysis will at some point fall into your lap. You may be asked to help plan for your agency’s personnel needs, or to analyze response times for service calls. You may be responsible for compiling monthly statistical reports that reflect crime trends in your jurisdiction, or for analyzing racial profiling data.

  4. What will you learn? • Part I and Part II crimes • UCR and reporting crime statistics • Interpret crime figures

  5. What will you be doing this week instead of reading a chapter? • Website:  Uniform Crime Reporting Program • Visit the FBIs website and read about its Uniform Crime Reporting Program.  Download the UCR booklet, which is highlighted several times on the site: • Uniform Crime Reporting Program

  6. Visit • Website: Part I and Part II Crimes Read this for a more simplified explanation of Part I and Part II crimes: • Part I and Part II Crimes

  7. Visit • Website:  City of Elgin Police Department The City of Elgin (Ill.) Police Department website also contains crime category definitions as well as administrative reports prepared by crime analysts. Familiarize yourself with the types of reports that have been generated for public viewing.

  8. Visit • Website:  IACA On the IACA website, view the Alexandria (Va.) City Council 2005 Crime Report. Take note of the different types of data included and how the report was tailored for the audience - specifically, the city council. This report would be considered an administrative report, but you should be able to identify some tactical analysis as well. • Alexandria (Va.) City Council 2005 Crime Report

  9. Part I crimes/INDEX CRIMES • Aggravated assault • Forcible rape • Murder • Robbery • Arson • Burglary • Larceny-theft • Motor vehicle theft • Part II, everything else:>:>

  10. Take some time on this one… • Some law enforcement actions result in higher crime statistics, when in reality they represent proactive measures such as handling nuisance-type complaints. The public perception of crime is something city managers and politicians are keenly aware of, and the ability to explain certain increases in a positive way can be an asset to your agency. After reviewing the Part II crimes in the Unit Resources, we will discuss what types of offenses, when statistically increased, can actually have a positive impact on the community.

  11. Bulletin Question for Final • Discuss how to pull essential information from a report or an analysis and put it in a format for disseminating both inside and outside the department. Which format works best? Identify some work-product pitfalls from your textbook readings. What are the guidelines to follow when you’re preparing a crime analysis presentation, be it a bulletin or an analysis?
