  2. NOAA PG Intro – OCONUS Activities Where we’ve been ….. What we’re doing …. Continued support of Hybrid GEO/LEO imagery, and RGB suite for AK Using GINA Direct Broadcast and Virtual Machines Testbed of new 24hr Micro. RGB in AK Assess Winter 2014/15 Transition of products to Pacific Region, VSP/training, and assessment prep. • Transition and Assessment of QPE to AK WFOs and RFC as well as San Juan WFO • Establish SPoRT’s suite of PG products (Hybrid, RGBs) in AK for both AWIPS I and II • Assessment of NtMicro RGB for Aviation and Cloud Analysis

SPoRT Expansion • In 2009, the SAC recommended “careful expansion” beyond Southern Region • Several obvious connections/candidates • Western Region & Others in Southern Region • Alaska Region • Visits to AK (several) • OCONUS PG meeting in Anchorage • Aug 2010 AFC, AFG (PG OCONUS Meeting) • July 2011 AFC, AKJ, (PG OCONUS Meeting) • June 2013 AFC, AFG (PG OCONUS Meeting) • GINA • 3 WFOs, CWSU, RFC • Sea Surface Temperature • Already generating CONUS waters, very popular product • Sea Ice Desk in Anchorage was the first user • Coastal WFOs • PG emphasis of applications to OCONUS • AWIPS I transitions • WindSat

Pacific Region • Pacific Region is most recent collaboration • Coordinated with region headquarters on visiting scientist proposal • Accepted and first trip occurred 5-9 May 2014 • Discussed collaborations with headquarters and met with forecasters at the co-located WFO Honolulu and Central Pacific Hurricane Center • Initial focus • GOES-R Quantitative Precipitation Estimate (QPE) • Sea Surface Temperature Composite • Passive microwave discussed QPE 15 min rain rate (in/hr) QPE 3 day accumulation (in)

Initial Visit • Site visit established working relationship • Corrected display issues in AWIPS • SSTs are well accepted • Used by Central Pacific Hurricane Center on Tropical Storm Wali to forecast intensity • QPE is the newest activity • Uses GOES IR to determine 15 min rain rate and multiple accumulation times • Uses passive microwave for calibration • Likely support satellite analysis product • Insight on storm dynamics • Modify wave forecasts IR Image Courtesy: Robert Ballard WFO Honolulu Reflectivity 1 hr QPE

Continued Collaborations • Assess QPE during wet season • Articulate training module • Assess QPE with current GOES to • Assess operational uses • Determine updates • Create baseline for comparison to new missions • Pacific Region will benefit from Japan’s Himawari • Nearly identical to GOES-R ABI • Test baselined products (like QPE) • WFO Guam likely a key player HimawariField of View Guam Hawaii
