  4.  Your task • Read p.52 about the persecution of racial groups. Note down: • The characteristics of an ‘Aryan’ • How great a threat Jewish people were to Germans • Do you think Hitler was largely responsible for the persecution of Jewish people & other minorities?

  5. Aryan master race • Characteristics: tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed • Pure genetic race – not result of racial interbreeding • Physically strong and healthy • Brought up to believe in traditional family values

  6. How great a threat were Jewish people? • Jews made 1% of German population • By the time Hitler stopped allowing Jews to leave Germany, 80% had left the country • Refugees included famous individuals, e.g. Albert Einstein, Bertolt Brecht & Ernst Chain

  8.  Your task Read about the so-called ‘undesirables’ in Nazi Germany. Note down the different categories and explain in your words why they were the target for persecution Which of these undesirables would have been top of the Nazis hate list? Rank them in order and explain your ideas

Undesirables • Tramps, beggars & alcoholics – 500, 000 sent to concentration camps in 1933 • Prostitutes, homosexuals or those with ‘loose morals’ • Those with strong religious or moral beliefs, e.g. Jehovah’s Witnesses or pacificsts • Unhealthy or disabled - burden on the community; 5000 children died in ‘nursing homes’ • Racially impure – e.g. gypsies

  14.  Homework • Research the story of an individual your teacher provides you with • How typical are their experiences? •  Research the life of a famous Jewish refugee such as Albert Einstein. Did they ever return to Germany? What were their views on the Nazi regime?
