Ivanwas born in 1550 in Moscow and lived until 1584, • Both parents died at a young age therefore being ignored and his education was neglected. • The Russian Orthodox took the thrown at age 17 proclaiming himself as “Tzar” instead of Grand Duke, becoming the first ruler to be crowned as the “Tsar of all Russia.” • He then married Anastasia Romanov, soon after her death remarrying again
The Czar’s main goal was to expand Russia to the East, beginning in Siberia, annexing a large Muslim population and turning Russia into a multi-ethnic and multi-religious state. • He annexed the Kazan and Astrakhan Khanates to the east.
Ivan formed new trading connections, opening up the White Sea and the port of Archangel to English merchants. • Ivan managed to change Russia from a medieval state to an empire, emerging regional power • He created an elite standing army
One of Moscow’s most famous landmarks is a reminder of this drive to expand Russia’s borders. St. Basil’s Cathedral on Red Square was built by Ivan’s order to commemorate Kazan’s invasion
The latter part in Ivan’s reign was a downfall • His wife had died, him becoming sick himself • The part of Russia that was directly ruled by Ivan was trying to break away from the direct rule
