  1. Pneumatic Hand • Computer controlled pneumatics • Project components: • Solenoid valves • Air-muscles • Air compressor

  2. Solenoid Valves • Electromechanical device • Air in • Air out • Purchased from Mead Fluid Components

  3. Air-muscles • McKibben Actuator • Inner rubber tube • Outer shell of weave • Ends contract when tube is inflated • Cheap, light, and strong • Purchased from Images Company

  4. Name:AM-01 Length:150mm Diameter:12mm Load pulled at 3.5 bars:3 Kilos Load pulled at 50 PSI:6.5 lbs 25% Contraction with load of:3 lbs Airmuscle: Small

  5. Airmuscle: Medium • Name:AM-02 • Length:210mm • Diameter:20mm • Load pulled at 3.5bars:20 Kilos • Load pulled at 50 PSI:45 lbs • 25% Contraction with load of:25 lbs

  6. Airmuscle: Large • Name: AM-04 • Length: 400mm • Diameter: 50mm • Load pulled at 3.5 bars: 160 Kilos • Load pulled at 50 PSI: 300 lbs • 25% Contraction with load of: 150 lbs

  7. Air Compressor • Small one in the lab • 20 gallon tank • Connected via flexible hose • Purchased from Grainger

  8. Other Parts • Control box • Tap Plastics • Hoses and tubes • Wacky Willies, ? • Connectors • Home Depot, A1 hose & coupling

  9. Problems • 1. Design a model of human arm and hand using pneumatic technology. • 2. In Wacky Willy and in Boeing Surplus store in Seatlle find pneumatic valves and actuators that you can use in building a big battlebot arm • 3. Experiment with different software strategies to control valves to allow for very fast action with high pressures, this is not trivial.
