  1. UPA Unit 2 What are the qualities of a good friend?

  2. MLA Format! • Cite all information taken from any outside source; identify and acknowledge the source where the information came from. • If you have multiple sources, you will need to have a “Works Cited” page at the end of your essay. We will go into this in more detail in a future lesson.

  3. MLA • Citation examples: • When using a quote to support your point in the middle of a paragraph, the way to cite is as follows: • Example: Delano is described as “a man of such native simplicity as to be incapable of satire or irony” (Melville 287). • After you use the quote, you put the author’s last name and the page number that the quote came from, in parentheses.

  4. MLA • When paraphrasing, you MUST still cite in order to avoid plagiarism. • When using a block quote, you do not need to use actual quotation marks (“ “) because you will be indenting the entire quote. • After a block quote, you simply add the page number in parentheses.

  5. MLA • Your essays and all future work must be in MLA paper format. The major rules are: • All margins must be set at one inch. • Use 12 point font, generally Times New Roman. And, always double space. • The heading must be on the top left side of the page.

  6. MLA Format • This is what your papers should look like: Your Name Mrs. Bilous English I Date Title Introductory paragraph

  7. UPA Essay • Compare and contrast Speak with “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”. • How do both of these stories present the qualities of a good friend? • You may write the essay by subject or by feature.

  8. By subject • Meaning: if you write the essay by subject, you will focus on three similarities and differences between the novel and the story.

  9. By feature • Meaning: if you write the essay by feature, you will be focusing on the qualities of a good friend from Speak and the qualities of a good friend from “I Know Why the Caged bird Sings”.

  10. Essay structure • 5 paragrah essay • Paragraph 1: • Introductory paragraph • This paragraph should include background information on both books, author information and your general ideas on the topic. This paragraph introduces the books. • ***IMPORTANT: The last sentence of the first paragraph MUST be your THESIS sentence!! It must reveal your point of view and show what you will discuss in the paper.

  11. Structure • Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 are your “body”paragraphs. These will contain your ideas and arguments and will be supported with quotes and paraphrasing from the two literary works.

  12. By subject • If you are writing the essay by subject, then your “body” paragraphs will look like this: • Body 1: Discuss the qualities of a good friend you found in “Speak”. Use quotes or paraphrase to support your point. Do not forget to cite the page number. • Body 2: Discuss the qualities of a friend you found in “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.
