Background • Health Care: Health care is social insurance for the ill and injured • 16% of America (42 million people) have no health insurance (therefore must pay for health services in full, or receive hospital charity) • 14% of Americans receive some form of public health care or health insurance (70% have private health insurance) 2 2

  3. Issues. Why is this important? • Health care insures that the population is happy and healthy. But, unfortunately, health care is costing tax payers much of their money, and we are spending more on health care than many other important issues. • Should we give everyone free health care or have a tiered system. Or, should we have the only definitely healthy people in our country be the ones who can pay? 3 3 3

  5. Costs • Health Care surpassed $2.3 trillion in 2008, more than three times the $714 billion spent in 1990, and over eight times the $253 billion spent in 1980. • More money is spent on health care than on education, defense, welfare, protection, general government, interest or pensions. 5 5 5

  6. The Future • Between the years of 1990 and 2008 the cost of healthcare more than tripled. • If we continue to increase the costs of healthcare like that, it’s estimated by 2020 it will cost $4.6 trillion. • If the U.S continues to spend like this it will eventually go bankrupt 6

  7. Political Viewpoints • Democrats: Think universal system for healthcare is a wise and realistic solution • Republicans: Believe healthcare reform bill is expensive and expands role of government (they are distrustful of government expansion into new areas) 7 7 7
