Introduction/Overview • Collaboration with community-based partners: • recruits students into healthcare professions • trains and supports healthcare professionals • advocates eliminating health disparities • Active in issues important to the service area: • rural economy • health disparities • cancer survivorship • geriatric education • genetics • community collaborations • retention, training and support of health care providers.

  7. Over 300 high school students are currently participating in these programs. Over the last three years 90% went on to college and of those 56% continued on a health career track. Healthcare Career Job Shadowing and Observation Opportunities:

It is important to grow locally those who will be trained and eventually return to southwest Oklahoma to provide the care that will be needed in the years to come. SwAHEC offers opportunities for middle school, high school and college students to explore health care careers by supporting activities about healthcare careers as well as job-shadowing opportunities for students to experience, first-hand, what working in various healthcare careers will be like. Students are better able to decide if they want to pursue healthcare careers, and learn the practical and educational steps they must take to achieve their career goals. In the last three years, SwAHEC has supported 519 middle school, high school and college students in job-shadowing opportunities. Over those three years, 89% of the high school graduates went on to college or healthcare technical training, and 51% are pursuing healthcare related training. Please support the allocation of funds to the Oklahoma AHEC program which is a line item of the Oklahoma State Department of Health budget: “Contractual services of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of Oklahoma State University for the Area Health Education Centers campaign: $795,000.” E-Oklahoma City The pipeline for future healthcare practitioners is crucial to the vitality of southwest Oklahoma.
