  10. Leading-in Pre-reading

  11. Pre-reading questions: • Skim the text to tell what kind of lady Anne is ? Anne is an independent and honest lady. She can endure any hardships, but she can’t tolerate those who are wrapped up in sorrow for their misfortunes. 2. Have you read any novels in which the characters are similar in personality to Anne ? Jane Eyre in ‘Jane Eyre’ Scarlite in ‘Gone with the Wind.

  12. While-reading

  13. Skimming • 1. How did Anne manage to survive during the Second World War? • 2. What can be inferred about Anne from her experiences during the war,her job interview and her refusal to eat out with the writer? • 3. How did Anne react to the fact that her husband agreed to have her breast removed by diagnostic surgery without her knowledge? • 4. What could Anne endure and what could she never tolerate? • 5. Why did Anne refuse her husband’s idea of having his breakfast in bed?

  14. Analysis of the text • Paragraphs 1—2 The author uses his recent accident---- an air crash--- as an introduction to the whole story. The first paragraph tells the readers what happens to the author, while the 2nd describes how his wife reacts to the accident. The description of her reaction naturally leads to the discussion of her good judgment in the following paragraphs

  15. Paragraphs 3—4 These 2 paragraphs are the first flashback in the story which describe Anne’s good judgment on previous occasions and her experiences during the 2nd World War. • Paragraphs 5—7 These paragraphs tell us how the author met Anne, fell in love with her eventually married her. This is the second flashback.

  16. Paragraphs 8 After 2 flashbacks, the author turns back to his recovery from the crash with his wife’s meticulous care. • Paragraphs 9—10 These 2 paragraphs are also a flashback. The author recalls how his wife handled her crisis: she never give in and always tried to help others.

  17. Paragraphs 11—13 These 3 paragraphs are closely related with the previous two, because they present a picture of how Anne saved her husband, helped rebuild his confidence and kept him moving on in her own way • Paragraphs 14 As is the case with most narrative writings, the concluding paragraph provides an end to the event( the air crash). However, the author goes beyond that by offering his general comments on Anne’s character, thus making the conclusion somewhat philosophical.
