Homework Starts Week 2 • Comes home on Monday • Homework journal (weekly assignment) • Review sheet (practice it; sign it) • Math pages daily (collect them) • Return on Friday
Homework High Frequency Words – Froggy/Buzz Words • Foundation for reading and writing success • Recognize and spell • Practice at school and at home • Pass off list by list (25 + 1 words, 5 lists)
Homework CVC Word Families • Beginning reading instruction (simple decoding) • Say sounds, blend to make word • Recognize chunks, read by sight • Practice at home for testing at school • Examples of CVC word families: • Cap, Map, Tap, • Cat, Bat, Rat • Sun, Run, Bun
Homework EnVision Math • Parent letter sent to introduce each new topic • Colorful daily homework (side 1 done in class) • Directions at bottom of page • Collect in Homework journal and return on Friday
Homework Letter(s)/Buzz words of the Week • Listed on Homework Review Sheet • Reinforce at home—recognition, writing, and sound • Bring in 1 picture or Buzz word to add to collage • “Show and Tell” must start with L.O.W.
Student Behavior • Smartie Pants—drawing on Friday; Treasure Chest visit • Table points—Smartie Pants for most team points • Traffic Light Behavior • Green—0-1 warnings (Great job!) • Yellow—2-3 warnings (Watch out!) • Red—4 or more warnings & behavior continues (Not a good day) • Red Card Report—sign and return • Students may go straight to red for serious misbehavior • Citations, referrals • Tickets for green or yellow cards—25 to visit Treasure Chest • Count, seal in envelope with student’s name, bring on Friday
Show and Tell • Assigned day of the week (Tuesday—Friday) • Bring in backpack (a surprise) • Must begin with Letter of the Week • 3 additional clues written with parent help • Absent? Forgot? You missed it! Wait until next week. • VIP has “Show and Tell” every day (Monday—Friday) and can begin with any letter (include letter in clues)
Kindergarten VIP • One student chosen weekly • In-class privileges & special duties • VIP bag—goes home Friday; return by Thursday • Decorate “STAR” page • Bring a few photos to share • Write about time with Benjy or Betsy (stuffed animal) • “Show & Tell” every day; can start with any letter
BirthdayCelebrations • No parties, drinks, balloons, gift bags • May send 1 treat per child—cupcake, cookie, etc. (no nuts) • Pre-arrange with teacher • Birthday bag—read book, write in journal, return next day • Party invitations—whole class or all of child’s gender
Book Orders • Optional • Inexpensive • Foster reading and literacy • Build our classroom library • Fliers come home every month or two • Complete order form; return with payment by deadline (one check) • Orders arrive in about 2 weeks
Important Information • Students may not arrive before 8:40 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.—no supervision • Park in a legal spot. Do not double park, block fire lane or bus access. • Walk child to gate. Say good-bye there and then “Sh-h-h-h.” • Students not picked up promptly after school will be taken to the office. • Keep parent contact and authorized pick-up information updated. • Help your child have regular and on-time attendance.
Not Acceptable Items • Weapons—real or pretend • Dangerous items • Medicine or cough drops • Money (unless specifically requested) • Toys from home (except for “Show and Tell” • Jewelry, make-up, purses • Anything that “becomes” a toy or distraction
Parent Helpers Needed! • Regular helpers needed daily—most important! (one hour weekly or every other week) • Occasional helpers (prearrange with teacher) • Work at home (color, cut, staple; monitor schedule)
Wish List • Things we need for lessons or activities • Posted outside classroom or on website • Take tickets (Post-its) as you choose, fill and return • If selecting item from website, email me so I know it is being filled • Ongoing items needed all year: • Small items for Treasure Chest • Glass baby food jars Thanks for your generosity
