Tips for Taking Care of Your Heating and Air Conditioning Unit Among the essential appliances at your place is a heating and air conditioning unit. When it malfunctions, you will find that even staying comfortably in that house can be quite challenging. To keep it well functioning and avoid costly repairs or replacements, follow the tips below to take care of and maintain it. 1.Power should be off You do not need to be told about the dangers of working around electricity, especially if you are not an expert. The air conditioning unit also has some moving parts that may harm you if you tried to operate it when still powered on. To run checks on the unit, first shut the power off to prevent any incidents. 2.Remove any debris present If you are opening the easy-to-open compartments, ensure to clean out any debris. Using your hands or a wet and dry vacuum, remove any leaves and other debris from the interior and then cover it. 3.Check out and clean the fins Get rid of the outer covers first, and then use the brush attachment to remove any dirt on the outside. You can then use a garden hose to gently spray through the fins, inside out, to get rid of any debris and dirt that may have built up from between them. However, you should avoid using a pressure washer as it can damage the fins. If the fins have excessive dirt, though, you can use commercially available fin cleaning sprays.
4.Straighten the fins up Any reduction of air supply through the unit’s fins can reduce its efficiency. To take care of that, carefully straighten the fins up using commercially available fin straightening tools or use a butter knife. 5.Cleaning the evaporator coil The evaporator coil also needs a clean-up. It is found on the inside furnace/blower unit and may have some foil duct tape covering it. To clean the coil, you can use a soft brush to get any dust off, then spray it with a no-rinse coil cleaner (commercially available). After the spray foams up, it will collect into the drain pan and can be cleaned using hot water, soap, and a little bleach. 6.Change the blow filter The blow filter needs a change at least twice a year. If your area is particularly dirty, you should change it often. Ensure to replace it with a filter with a similar airflow rating.
