  1. Genetics & Nature vs. Nurture

  2. Genetics • Heredity – The genetic transmission of traits from parents to offspring. • Genes– The basic building blocks of heredity. • Some traits are determined by pairs of genes while others (ex. Blood) are controlled by a gene. • Chromosomes – Threadlike structures of DNA where genes can be found.

  3. Genetics

  4. Nature vs. Nurture • Nature– Refers to what genetic traits people inherit & how they affect development. • The biological foundation that prepares a person to develop in certain ways. • Nurture – Refers to the effect environmental factors have on development. • Includes family, education, culture, living conditions, etc.

  5. Nature or Nurture? On the piece of paper you are taking notes on number your paper 1-10. You will be given 10 traits. For each trait listed, you will mark G if the trait is acquired through genetic factors, E if it is marked through environmental factors, or GE if it acquired through the interaction of genetics & environment.

  6. Nature or Nurture? Extreme, Repeated Violence Alcoholism Intelligence Obesity Homosexuality Bi-polar disorder Shyness Thrill Seeking Dyslexia Nicotine Dependence

  7. Nature vs. Nurture Q: What do these results tell us? A: Both our environment and genetics play a large role in our development. You cannot have one without the other.*
