DID YOU KNOW? • Almost 40% of the planet’s population have access to the internet • It’s predicted that by 2020, there will be 7 times as many internet-connected devices as people on the planet • NEW TECHNOLOGY IS GOOD NEWS! • The internet is bringing our movement closer together than ever before, enabling Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to connect, share and advocate for issues affecting them • … BUT THERE ARE RISKS • Children and young people’s rights and online reputations are at risk when using the internet • They need the skills, awareness and confidence to manage the risks, and help their friends, family and communities do the same WHY INTERNET SAFETY?

Adapting activities: you know your group best. Feel free to adapt activities to suit them. • Choosing activities: activities are designed for members of any gender. Age groups are suggested but you should use your own judgement on what is appropriate. • Info boxes: contain useful information for the leader to share with the group, connected to their activities. • Online links: considered appropriate for a youth audience, however leaders should always check links before giving to children or young people. • Online time: Surf Smart can be used in environments without internet access. Children younger than 13 are recommended not to use social media such as Facebook or Twitter, however this is at the discretion of the leader and parents. • Resources and support: at the back of the Surf Smart pack is a page of online resources as well as a glossary of terms for easy reference GENERAL ADVICE FOR LEADERS
It is recommended that leaders follow the guidance from your Member Organization on safeguarding children online. General best practice is found at the end of the Surf Smart pack, including: • EMAIL : considering how to safely communicate with children and parents • SOCIAL NETWORKING: ensuring any social networks set up for your group are safe spaces • PHOTO AND VIDEO: creating guidelines with parents’ input for appropriate sharing of video and photo content • YOUR OWN ONLINE SECURITY: make sure your own devices and profile are safe • SAFEGUARDING GROUP MEMBERS: dealing with concerns about young people’s online activities ADULT INTERNET SAFETY GUIDANCE
