High Performance Cosmetic Finish Acrylic Polysiloxane
Interfine®979Acrylic Polysiloxane Represents the latest advances in super durable, high performance cosmetic finish technology Interfine®979 is a patented high performance, two component, high volume solids acrylic polysiloxane cosmetic finish providing excellent long term durability. Interfine® 979 significantly improves upon the gloss and colour retention exhibited by typical polyurethane finishes Interfine®979 is intended as a cosmetic finish, to be used on external vessel areas above the waterline. For use at Newbuilding and Major Refurbishment, offering extended in service periods whilst maintaining excellent cosmetic performance.
A word about UV Resistance • The ultra-violet (UV) component of natural sunlight contains a certain amount of energy • This energy is damaging to certain coating types such as those containing epoxy binder • The energy causes a breakdown of the binder ‘chemistry’ • This causes a release of the pigmentation and discolouration of the binder itself • Resulting in chalking, colour change and gloss loss • The acrylic polysiloxane binder within Interfine®979has excellent resistance to the UV light from natural sunlight and is able to slow down the onset of chalking, gloss loss and colour change
Technology - Inorganic Backbone The Carbon-Carbon (C-C) bonds within traditional “organic” coatings are less resilient than those found in acrylic polysiloxanes Less energy required to degrade the binder Polysiloxane coatings are significantly more resistant to UV (sunlight) degradation which means much improved cosmetic properties over time in service More energy required to degrade the binder
Interfine® 979 Acrylic Polysiloxane - Durability • Typically measured as the UV resistance of top coats • Epoxy <Alkyd << Polyurethane<<<< Epoxy Polysiloxane << Acrylic Polysiloxane • The graph below dramatically illustrates the differing UV durability on accelerated testing Interfine®979 % gloss retention 1st generation epoxy polysiloxane Traditional polyurethane finish All comparisons were conducted on panels prepared on the same colour/shade Hrs
Technology & Benefits of Interfine®979 • The inclusion of polysiloxane chemistry into cosmetic finish coating systems has provided a significant step forward in performance. • When correctly formulated, specified and applied acrylic polysiloxane technology provides unrivalled performance. • Easy recoatability allowing customer upgrades using Intergard® 269 as a tie coat with no need for secondary surface preparation. • Interfine®979is a high performance coating and is best suited to the high performance Intershield® 300 anti-corrosive primer where it may be possible to specify a two coat system as compared to the traditional three. • Acrylic polysiloxanes have demonstrated their ability to outperform traditional coatings in a wide range of applications. • DURABILITY • FLEXIBILTY/IMPACTRESISTANCE
Epoxy modified polysiloxane Interfine®979 Mechanical Performance • Acrylic modification of polysiloxanes gives coatings with excellent mechanical (flexing) properties • Flexibility suited to areas subject to flexing and vibration • A comparison of relative flexibility has been demonstrated in the laboratory Interfine®979exhibits significantly superior flexibility

Interfine®979Acrylic Polysiloxane Case studies – Large modern cruise ship • A Chief Officer of a large cruise ship produced a financial study of using a polyurethane finish versus a polysiloxane coating for maintaining the topsides of a large modern cruise vessel. • The two products were Interfine®979and a traditional polyurethane • Area of application was the 2,000m2 topsides, especially the Titanic area
Cost Benefit Analysis example; Chief Officer – Large modern cruise ship • Parameters taken into account • Cost and volume of fresh water used for cleaning • Cost and volume of the cleaning solution (Metal Brite) • Cost and volume of the two types of paint • Crew time • Access costs (Hiring temporary platforms) • “What we have noticed with our test-patch in the Titanic area is very much improved performance in regards to cleaning, compared with polyurethane. A lot less black staining from hydrocarbons and sulphuric acid is apparent as well”. • “Worth noting also is that the performance of the paint (Interfine®979) has not deteriorated in any significant way. Chief Officer
Finishes Penalty Calculator example. Chief Officer – Large modern cruise ship Advantages of Interfine®979vs. Polyurethane 43% less water required 25% less cleaning chemicals 33% less paint 75% less crew time 3.2 days less hire costs for access

Far Scout – Interfine®979 36 months in service The gloss level and colour retention was “fantastic” as described by the Supt. No touch up by the crew in any area of topsides.
Far Scout – 36 months in service Far Scout in dry-dock at 36 months, all topside painting was cancelled as the vessel looked so good. Budget for painting was spent elsewhere.
Far Scout – 48 months in service 48 months or four years the topsides still are in excellent condition
