How do we go about teaching in/for this area? • Action Pact • Incorporates basic game & movement skills into a high energy program to boost self-confidence, enhance enjoyment of activity & improve fitness • Australian Fitness Award • A program of easy to use tests, a motivational system of awards and supporting curriculum ideas fro 9-18 year old students • Daily Physical Education

  4. Action Pact • A fully integrated, health-related activity program • Provides a powerful resource for those schools which aim to develop and promote healthy living through their school curriculum

Australian Fitness Award • Test items are designed to measure the health-related fitness of students. • They include: • Growth: Height and Weight, with Body Mass Index (BMI) calculated by the computer program. • Cardiorespiratory Endurance: Multi-Stage Fitness Test and 1.6 km run/walk. • Muscular Strength and Endurance: The Curl-up and the Basketball Throw. • Muscle and Joint Flexibility: The Sit and Reach Tests and Shoulder Stretch.

  6. Daily Physical Education Many formats are used. The best I’ve seen & what you should aim for involves: • 1st 20 minutes of the day • Vertical class groupings • Led by grade 6’s trained by HPE teacher • Aerobic in nature • Activities rotate on a weekly basis WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN?

Other Appropriate Programs • Circuit training – repeating 1 or more exercises as many times as possible within a time limit • Obstacle course – an arrangement of small equipment & large apparatus designed to improve 1 or more of the components of fitness (strength, power, endurance, agility, flexibility, speed) • Jogging – an easy, relaxed run that does not place undue fatigue on the runner • Rope Jumping • Aerobic dancing

Practical Requirements for Primary Schools ACHPER recommends that primary school children receive • a minimum of 3 hours of PE each week • scheduled over the week, preferably on a daily basis with 3 times per week as a minimum • emphasising fitness aspects for 1/3 of the time & skill development for 2/3 of the time

Why do Anything?What are the Benefits? • Enhanced proficiency in the neuromuscular skills that are the basis for successful participation in games, dance, sports and leisure activities, • Optimal growth of the nervous system, for which sensory stimulation through physical activity is essential, • Regulation of obesity because it increases energy expenditure, suppresses appetite, increases metabolic rate and increases lean body mass,

Benefits ctd. • Enhanced aerobic fitness, muscular endurance, muscle power and muscle strength, • Determinant of cardio-vascular heart disease due to its effects on blood lipids, blood pressure, obesity and capacity for physical work, • The development of cognition through opportunities to develop learning strategies, decision-making, acquiring/retrieving/integrating information, and solving problems, • A more positive attitude toward physical activity leading to a more active lifestyle during unscheduled leisure time,
