  1. WORKPLACE ROAD SAFETY REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS“Stopping Distances” • 2013

  2. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” TRAVEL SPEEDS • Speeding is a factor in over one-third of fatal crashes in Perth and one-eighth of crashes involving hospitalisation. • Speeding is not just driving faster than the posted limit. It is also driving too fast for the prevailing weather, light, traffic and road conditions.

  3. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” SPEEDING INCREASES THE CHANCE OF A CRASH • The risk of being involved in a crash resulting in injury is doubled with every 5km/h increase in free travelling speed above 60km/h.

  4. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” • Crash risk by travel speed in a 60km/h zone

  5. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” STOPPING DISTANCES • How long do you need to stop if travelling at 60km/h on a dry road in a modern car with good tyres and brakes?

  6. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” STOPPING DISTANCE = 45 METRES

  7. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” • SLOW DOWN. SAVE LIVES.

  8. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances”

  9. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” REDUCING SPEED CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE • Introduction of the 50km/h urban default speed limit in 2001 resulted in: • 20 per cent decrease in all crashes in Perth and16 per cent decrease in regional towns • 51 per cent reduction in pedestrian crashes • Achieved with just a 1-2 km/h reduction in average travel speeds across the road network and fewer vehicles doing excessive speeds.

  10. REDUCING TRAVEL SPEEDS IN METRO AREAS - “Stopping Distances” • SLOW DOWN. SAVE LIVES.
