  2. ETHOS • Appeal to the speaker’s character • speaker is credible & trustworthy • emphasis on shared values between speaker and audience • A person might buy nike shoes because they find Michael Jordan a credible spokesperson. • Impression of character can be the result of speaker’s tone

  3. LOGOS • Appeal to reason • offer clear, rational ideas • Specific Details, Examples, Facts, Statistics, Expert Testimony • Acknowledge a Counterargument • Concede opposing argument may be true • Refute the validity of all or part of the argument

  4. PATHOS • Appeal to Emotion • figurative language, personal anecdotes are markers • choosing words with strong connotations • Argument that appeals only to emotion is generally propaganda
