  3. Innovation and Training Victoria the “Innovation State” • Future prosperity of our state rests with the skills of our citizens • Vocational Education and Training (VET) plays a central role in meeting skills needs and adapting to the new economic environment

  4. Innovation and Training To meet skill needs and adapt to the new economic environment VET requires: • Flexibility • Innovativeness • Adaptability

Ministerial Statement Ministerial Statement: Knowledge and Skills for the Innovation Economy • Supports innovation, flexibility and adaptability • Enhances VET sector capacity to: • further respond to the needs of existing and emerging industries • be innovative and specialise in key industry areas • Drives innovation at three levels: • Strengthening policy and resource allocation processes and planning arrangements • Improving the delivery of VET and developing strategic links between providers and industry • Introducing a series of specific responses to support these measures

Innovation and Training Skills Shortages • Next year 24,000 jobs will go begging simply because there are not enough skilled workers to fill them. • Fast-paced technological advances are driving major changes in industry • Government, TAFE Institutions and industry are already working together to address these challenges.

Innovation and Training VET addressing Skills Shortages • Increasing the number of apprenticeships and traineeships – more than doubling the number of places from 1998-2002. • Supporting TAFE institutes to shift their delivery to areas of critical demand. • Working more closely with industry to predict their future skill needs and coordinating industry wide training initiatives.

  9. Innovation in VET in Victoria Better VET for more people… Examples of how Victorian VET is: • Using new technology • Addressing disadvantage • Supporting broader State objectives • Linking with industry and adapting to emerging sectors

Using New Technologies LearnScope University of Ballarat (TAFE division) • E-Learning professional development to improve content delivery • Developed online forums, video clips and digital stories to aid skill acquisition, e-Learning resources to overcome literacy and numeracy difficulties, online assessment tools

  11. Using New Technologies LearnScope University of Ballarat (TAFE division) Dallas Jones is traditional trades teacher at the University of Ballarat. Through LearnScope funding, Dallas has developed an online WebCT classroom for staff and students. This is a digital story that he has put together about his e-learning journey to Eureka! Eureka was a conference held earlier this month. Funded by OTTE and e-Works, it showcased a number of e-learning projects and their impact on the VET sector. Please click on me

  12. Addressing disadvantage Whereveruni RMIT TAFE Division • Simple, informal, extremely flexible teaching targeting disadvantage members of the community • Partnership with the Salvation Army, The Smith Family • Funded by Microsoft and the Department of Education and Training’s Innovation Fund

Building Capacity Commonwealth Games Holmesglen Institute of TAFE • Customised and specialised training for 16,000 volunteers, in collaboration with Melbourne 2006 • Innovation Fund grant support innovative teaching • Development of role-specific and venue specific training, the Training Facilitator Kit and Workbook and the website • Won a similar contract to deliver training for the Doha Asian Games in 2006 • Invited to New Deli in preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games

Linking with Industry International Success Swinburne University (TAFE Division) • Strong links with industry keep content vocationally oriented, informed and up-to-date • Swinburne’s School of Engineering collaboration with: • Specialist Centre for New Manufacturing; • the Advanced Technology Training Capability Alliance (ATTCA) • the Industry Liaison Agent for Precision Engineering (Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited - AMTIL) • Won contract to develop course content for Singapore government
