Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Unit Plan By: Nicole Poinsett
My pre-algebra students • In 7th grade • Honors students • Capable of learning material in a short amount of time • Basic computer knowledge
State Objectives • MA.7.1.5 perform operations with integers (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, division • MA.7.5.4 solve application problems involving measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and dispersion (range) from data, graphs, tables, and experiments using appropriate technology. • MA.7.5.3 collect, organize, graphically represent, and interpret data displays including: frequency distributions, line-plots, scatter plots, box and whiskers, and multiple-line graphs. • TEC.7.6.1 use appropriate computer-based productivity tools to create and modify solutions to problems. • TEC.7.3.2 select appropriate spreadsheet functions to organize data and solve problems.
Materials needed • Overhead • Transparencies • Calculators • Decks of cards • Computers with internet connections • Newspapers • Poster board • Markers
Websites For me: • http://euclid.barry.edu/~marinas/mat476/bball/kup319fr.html • http://www.learnnc.org/learnnc/lessonp.nsf/0/bf4d7a669e269d3085256b6600671157?OpenDocument • http://www.theteacherscorner.net/math/miscellaneous/mean.htm For students: • http://www.ex.ac.uk/cimt/mepres/book8/bk8i5/bk8_5i2.htm
Day 1 • Go over definitions of mean, median, mode, and range • Do examples of how to find them • Put sample problems on overhead for students to do by hand • Put graphs on overhead to show how to use graphs to find mean, median mode, and range
Day 2 • Review basic spreadsheet function • Hand out basketball scores • Enter formulas to calculate the mean, median, mode, and range of each basketball player from a given game
Day 3 • Review on web site • Examples • Exercises • Card game • Questionnaire
Day 4 • Information collected on the overhead • Break into groups of 2 or 3 • Assign each group a question • Construct bar graph • Determine the mean, median, mode, and range of the data
Require Learner Participation • Honors math students • Computers • Online exercise • Card game • Group project
Evaluate and Revise • Participation • Online exercise • Group project
