  2. overall aim • to transform the FE system so that it delivers business innovation in addition to skills for business background • the Sainsbury Review recognised that there is considerable scope to raise the profile of knowledge transfer in FE and build on the excellent work some FE colleges and training providers have done • Innovation Nation builds on the Sainsbury Review and sets out a stakeholder-led strategy for unlocking the talent of the FE workforce to deliver business innovation through knowledge transfer

  3. white paper commitment DIUS will pilot a revenue-based FE Specialisation and Innovation Fund to build the capacity of the FE sector to support businesses to raise their innovation potential. Through a small number of targeted pathfinder projects DIUS will seek to unlock the talent of the FE workforce to drive business innovation through knowledge transfer.

  4. what is our strategy? • a small number of pathfinder projects will be commissioned to signpost the most effective ways to build the capacity of specialist FE networks to provide innovative solutions to business • the projects will be required to identify how best to mainstream business innovation across the FE sector and so realise the vision and implement the Sainsbury recommendations

FE and UK competitivenessthe long term view – what success looks like • employers invest in specialist networks as the best source of business innovation expertise in FE • specialist networks are the focus of collaborative provider effort to continuously improve business innovation performance • specialist providers sustain business innovation capacity through their mainstream self-improvement programmes • specialist networks extend their membership through replicating best practice

  6. pathfinder objectivesthe starting point • build capacity to engage in the FE business innovation market - and then look to mainstream • grow the business innovation market through collaborative effort in specialist networks • improve impact of business innovation solutions by benchmarking against the market leaders • refine business innovation solutions as part of a network-wide continuous improvement process • develop mechanisms for sharing learning within the network and with the wider FE sector

  7. likely ways of workingthe focus of collaborative effort • alignment of support mechanisms and funding landscape for business innovation in FE • deployment of both inclusive and exclusive networking models to drive business innovation capacity building • extension of FE business model beyond skills to include knowledge transfer and business innovation • withdrawal from passive dissemination of best practice, and engagement with action learning models • peer review to test the robustness of the mainstreaming strategy for each pathfinder
