  2. Definition • You could say that a music video is a short promotional film that accompanies a music track by a recording artist/band and/ora short film to explain/express the story of a song.

  3. Purpose The purpose of a music video are many. Artists and bands do it to promote a song, album and/or a tour. A music video allows fans to see their favourite band/artist without them physically being there. By a music video you get recognized faster and easier which is good because it creates a fan base. With a music video you show the audience what you are about and what kind of “swag” your band or you as an artist represent. Your swag is what appeals to the target audience. A music video is also used in an extension of outlets to exhibit the artist/band which means> more money.

  4. Viral marketing • Viral marketing is when we share something through social networks e.g. Facebook, twitter so that when other people see this they share it with their friends and their friends share it with their and so on. This is perfect for small record company's and self promotion because it is free. So it does not cost the artist, band, or record label anything. Even by communicating we are viral marketing e.g. if I was to tell my friend about a song I heard and he tells his/her friends and so on this song would soon be known.

  5. Income Music videos are not the only way to make money or to promote an artist/band or for the fans to see or listen to their favourite artist and band. We are able to download nowadays, we can pay to see concerts, we buy their e.g. perfume, cd’s, and T-shirts. And every time the song plays on the radio these artists and bands get paid. This counts up till 20 years after they die. This means that artists/bands make a lot of money in many different ways. Viral marketing plays quit a big role in this as well. Lets say I went to a concert and got a t-shirt from the artist/band that looks really nice and walk with that in collage my friends most likely will ask me what this kind of t-shirt is that I am wearing. I would tell them about the concert, the band and of course the music. If they really liked my t-shirt they would want one as well and most likely start listening to the band/artist. Now the band/artist made money by selling t-shirts, and created a bigger fan base.

  6. Marketing tool • Big labels like EMI and Sony will use high budget music video, adverts on the internet and many other ways to promote themselves while independent artists (unsigned artists/band) promote themselves by low budget videos and help of viral marketing.

  7. Self promotion • Unsigned band/artist • Shoot, edit own video • Release as viral clip • Easy and cheap way for unsigned band & artist When you are an unsigned band or artist to get recognized you have to shoot and edit your own video so that you then can release the video as an viral clip. Because no one else e.g. a label is doing this for you, you call that self promoting.
