  1. P.W. Anderson P.W. Higgs Measurement of the transmission of light With sample Without sample Intensity n=3 n=2 <Tc n=1 n=0 >Tc Transmission Photon Energy (meV) The birth of a massive photon. Dirk van der Marel’s Group DPMC, 24 quai Ernest-Ansermet CH-1211 Genève 4 Suisse The Anderson mechanism (1958,1963) in superconductors and the Higgs mechanism (1964,1967) in elementary particle physics Photon without mass and a Cooper pair with mass. The phase of the Cooper pair couples to the photon The photon aquires a mass due to the interaction with the Cooper pair In vacuum The photon has no mass. It’s energy is given by: In the superconductor (T<Tc) The electronic charge causes a coupling between the superconducting order and the photon: the photon becomes massive and it’s energy is now given by : p is the momentum of the photon, c the speed of light nth maximum : nth minimum : Photon energy (meV) Photon momentum (10-24 g cm/sec) Conclusion The generation of massive photons in high Tc superconductors has been shown experimentally. The same mechanism (Higgs) is supposedly responsable for the masses of elementary particles The experimental determination of this is one of the principal missions of the LHC.
