  5. Facts • Apartheid was made a reality in 1948 when the National Party was brought to power. • Laws were made to classify people as Bantu (black Africans) or white (descendants of British) • Government set up Bantustans- small so-called nations within the country’s borders set aside for blacks. • White Minority only made up 10% of population while blacks made up 80%. • Lasted approx 45 years.

  6. Argument • Nelson Mandela was wrongly arrested and imprisoned for his role in trying to stop Apartheid. All he wanted to do was stop Apartheid but instead he had to give up his career and family, live like an outlaw, and endure twenty-seven years in prison.

  7. Supporting Ideas • 1956- Mandela was arrested for treason because he was expressing his opinion of Apartheid to others. Also, because he created the Defiance Campaign which asked for volunteers to help end Apartheid. • Arrested for “trying to overthrow government” when really he was trying to help the government. • For 2 years Mandela lived as a outlaw, disguising himself as a chef, chauffeur, and garden boy. • Upon his return to South Africa, Mandela was arrested and sentenced to five years imprisonment for inciting the country and leaving without travel documents. • In court, he put the state on trail arguing that he was being unfairly punished • Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years and was finally released in 1990 • Soon after he became the president of South Africa, the world’s newest democracy.
