  4. History • Judaism is a religious tradition with origins dating back nearly four thousand years, rooted in the ancient near eastern region of Canaan (which is now Israel and Palestinian territories). Originating as the beliefs and practices of the people known as "Israel," classical, or rabbinic, Judaism did not emerge until the 1st century C.E. Judaism traces its heritage to the covenant God made with Abraham and his lineage — that God would make them a sacred people and give them a holy land. • A “covenant” is a binding agreement.

  5. Beliefs and Practices • Monotheistic (belief in one God). • Humanity is the pinnacle of creation and people are indebted to their Creator. • Human bodies are from the earth, their souls are from heaven. • Humans were created with “free will”, giving them the option of choosing “life and prosperity” or “death and adversity”.

  6. Afterlife and Salvation • Belief in heaven. • When the body dies, the soul remains in heaven. • Both Jews and righteous Gentiles (non-Jews) have a reserved place in heaven based on their study of the Torah along with prayer, repentance, and good deeds.
