  1. Prepositions The GPS of grammar.

  2. Recognize a Preposition! • Prepositions are used to indicate location. Usually, prepositions show location in the physical world. For example... The puppy is by his friend. The puppy is in the bucket. The puppy is on the floor.

  3. Prepositions • Where are the prepositions in the following sentences? • At midnight, Jill craved mashed potatoes with grape jelly. • In the spring, I always vow to plant tomatoes but end up buying them at the market. • During the marathon, Iggy’s legs complained with sharp pains shooting up his calves.

  4. Prepositional Phrases • Prepositions generally introduce prepositional phrases. The formula goes something like this: Preposition + Optional Modifiers + Noun/Pronoun/Gerund

  5. Prepositional Phrases • Here are some examples: • At school (At=Prep, School=Noun) • According to us (According to=Prep, Us=Pronoun • By eating (By=Prep, Eating=Gerund) • Under the stove (Under=Prep, the=mod, stove=noun) • In the crumb-filled rumpled sheets (In=Prep, the, crumb-filled, rumpled=modifiers, sheets=noun)

  6. Prepositional Phrases • Some prepositional phrases also act as subordinate conjunctions, meaning that they will have both a subject and a verb. These prep. phrases become subordinate clauses! • Those prepositions are: after, as, before, since, and until • Example: After Sam and Esmerelda kissed goodnight... • Example: As Jerome buckled on the parachute... • Before I eat frog legs... • Since we enjoyed the squid eyeball stew...

  7. Prepositional Phrases • If you find a noun following one of those five prepositions (after, as, before, since, and until), then you just have a prepositional phrase. • Example: Before dinner... • Example: After calculus... • Example: Since the horrible breakup...
