  1. Dental Handpieces – Types and Uses in Dentistry The Dental Handpiece forms a very important part of dentistry. it is a tool that is used to drill into the teeth at a high speed for various purposes be it for removing the tooth decay, shaping the tooth for crown preparation or for shaping the root canal including removing old or temporary tooth filing. The Dental Hand Piece can be grouped into different types depending on various factors. On the basis of speed, it is of two types – high and low- speed hand piece. The Dental High Speed Hand Piece can rotate at a speed of 400,000 rpm and it uses burs, while the low- speed consists of an inbuilt motor with a speed of 80,000 rpm. On the basis of design, we have air driven and electric type. The former type contains an air-driven turbine inside that generates the rotational motion producing a high pitch sound. Then we have the electric hand piece that works on an electric motor. It has many advantages over the traditional air driven hand piece such as considerable reduction of the noise that makes the dental treatment less dreadful for the patients and relief to their ears! In terms of efficiency, the electric hand piece has an edge over the air driven ones as they produce approximately 60 W of cutting power as compared to 20 W leading to a more precise tooth preparation with increased efficiency and fewer efforts. Since the bur contacts the tooth for a shorter time, it also prevents over heating of the tooth. Nowadays, the hybrid Air-Electric hand piece is available in the market.
