  4. Translation He was fluent in Greek and Arabic. He rewrote Hunayn's translations of ptolemy’sGeography. • Astronomy According to Copernicus Thabit determined the length of the sidereal year as 365 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes and 12 seconds (an error of 2 seconds). He based his claim on Latin text. Thabit published his observations of the sun.

  5. Mathematics He wrote on the theory of numbers. He extended their use to describe the ratios geometrical quantities, a step which the Greek never took. He solved the chessboard problem. He also described Pythagoras theorem • Physics He proposed a theory of motion in which both the upward and downward motion are caused by weight.
