Differentiate various types of assessment activities Identify the driving forces behind the “assessment push” in higher education. List, discuss and adapt typical steps in conducting program assessment. Identify, describe and construct tools for program assessment. Locate additional resources on assessment principles and procedures. Presentation objectives
Free-writing exercise For one minute, please write about your hopes, fears and misgivings regarding assessment at Cal Poly Pomona.

Recognize the need for assessment. In consultation with faculty & other stakeholder groups, develop a program mission. Articulate educational outcomes. Cognitive: what should students know? Affective: what should students value? Psychomotor: what should they be able to do? Program assessment steps (1 of 3)
Determine where the outcomes are developed in the program. Identify & evaluate, or develop, assessment tools for the outcomes. Surveys & interviews Portfolios Exams & projects Program assessment steps (2 of 3)
Collect data. Focus on the overall program results. Stay away from using data to evaluate individual faculty. Analyze data for improvement opportunities. Refine goals & tools, and start the cycle again. Program assessment steps (3 of 3)
