  2. Feudalism • The feudal system was based on rights and obligations. • A landowner called a Lord would want protection from the military Lord Farquaad

  3. Feudalism • In return for protection, the Lord offered part of his land called a Fief • The person receiving the fief was called a Vassal

  4. Feudalism • Knights were mounted horsemen who pledged to defend their lords’ lands for fiefs

  5. Feudalism • Status determined a person’s power and prestige: • Fighters (Nobles and Knights) • Who Pray (Church Leaders) • Workers (Serfs and Peasants) *Social class was inherited*

  6. Manors • The manor was the lord’s estate • The lord provided the housing • Serfs provided the labor

  7. Chivalry • Landowners began trying to expand their territory • The role of knight began to be glorified

  8. Chivalry • With the invention of the saddle, knights began to utilize horses • Knights on horseback were very useful…why?

  9. Chivalry • Chivalry is a set of ideals • Demands that a knight fight bravely and defend 3 masters: • Heavenly Lord • Earthly Feudal Lord • His Chosen Lady

  10. Chivalry • Noble’s sons began training to become a knight at age 7 • Began at the rank of a page (servant) • Learned humility

  11. Chivalry • At the age of 14, the boy would reach the rank of squire • Acted as a servant to a knight

  12. Chivalry • Finally, at age 21, the boy would become a knight • To gain experience, the new knight would travel to practice in local wars • Also participated in tournaments

  13. Weapons of the day • Siege Tower: allowed soldiers to go over a castle wall

  14. Weapons of the Day • Trebuchet: worked like a giant slingshot • Could propel an object like a giant stone, up to almost 1000 feet

  15. Weapons of the Day • A Mangonel: flung huge rocks into castle walls • Could propel a rock up to 1300 feet

  16. Weapons of the Day • Battering Ram: made of heavy timber with a sharp metal tip • Swung back and forth to knock down castle doors
