  2. Matter • anything that takes up space and has mass. • made up of extremely small particles, too small to be seen with a microscope, called atoms. • can exist in three states: solid, liquid, or gas. • can be classified based on its composition (what it is made of).

  3. I. Pure Substances • A sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties. Atoms Elements Compounds Molecules

  4. A. Elements (Pure Substance) • pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substance by physical or chemical means. • made up of only one type of atom. Ex: Gold, Silver, Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen,

Compounds (Pure Substance) • Pure substance composed of two or more different elements that are chemically combined. • Can only be separated into simpler substances by chemical means, not physically • one way that two or more atoms can combine is to form a molecule. Ex: Water, Carbon Dioxide, Table Salt NaCl CO2 H2O

  6. II. Mixtures • are composed of two or more different substances that retain their own individual properties and are combined physically (mixed together). • can be separated by physical means (filtration, sifting, or evaporation). • can be heterogeneous or homogenous

  7. A. Heterogeneous Mixture • In a heterogeneous mixture, which is not uniform throughout, the component substances can be visibly distinguished. Ex: Salad B. Homogeneous Mixture • In a homogeneous mixture, which is uniform throughout, the substances are evenly mixed and cannot be visibly distinguished. The particles of the substances are so small that they cannot be easily seen. Another name for a homogeneous mixture is a solution. • Ex: KoolAid, Air

Made of matter • Two or more substances that have been physically mixed • Can be homogeneous or heterogeneous • Heterogeneous-can see the individual parts of the mixture • Homogeneous- can not see the individual parts of the mixture. • Physical change happens to form a mixture. • Can be separated by evaporation, filtration, or sifting. • Made of matter • Only one atom • Smallest form of matter that can exist. • Can not be broken down • Found on the periodic table • Made of matter • Two or more atoms that have chemically combined. • Can be broken down into the individual elements that make it up. • Chemical change happens to form a compound.
