  6. What is an STI • STI stands for a Sexually Transmitted Infection • STI’s are transmitted through sexual activity and as a result of the infection can become and STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease)

  7. There are many facts and myths about STI’s

  8. Myth • Only dirty people can get STI’s • This is false. Anyone can get an STI if they don’t properly protect themselves

  9. Fact • I can get an STI without having vaginal intercourse • You can contract an STI through anal, oral, and vaginal intercourse

  10. Myth • I will know if I have an STI • Many STI’s don’t have noticeable symptoms. So yes that means you may not be able to see it. Some can go unnoticed for years until they begin to cause harm to the body.

  12. Myth • STI’s are curable so I don’t have to worry about protecting myself • Yes SOME STI’s are curable but not all.

  13. Fact • The best way to prevent yourself from acquiring and STI is by being abstinent

  14. Chlamydia • Most people who have chlamydia don’t know it since the disease often has no symptoms • Chlamydia is the MOST COMMONLY reported STD in the United States. It is easy to cure, but can impact a woman’s ability to have children if left untreated.

Gonorrhea • Also none as “THE CLAP” • Symptoms in men and women vary depending on what part of the body is infected: anus, eyes, mouth, genitals, or throat • Symptoms include a burning sensation when urinating ,a white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis, increased vaginal discharge or anal bleeding • It can impact a woman’s ability to have children if left untreated.

Genital Herpes • Most people with genital herpes infection do not know they have it • You can get genital herpes even if your partner shows no signs of the infection • If you have any symptoms (like a sore on your genitals, ESPECIALLY one that periodically recurs)laboratory tests can tell if you have genital herpes • THERE IS NO CURE FOR HERPES, but treatment is available to reduce symptoms.

Syphilis • Syphilis is caused by a bacterium • It can cause long-term complications and/or death if not properly treated • It is easy to cure in its early stages • Signs and symptoms of syphilis include a firm, round, small, and painless sore on the genitals, anus, or mouth, or a rash on the body.

  22. Pubic Lice • Also called “Crabs” • Pubic lice are tiny insects that infect the pubic hair area and lay eggs • These lice can also be found in armpit hair and eyebrows • Symptoms include itching in the area covered by pubic hair, were the itching often gets worse
