  2. Europeans Colonize Southeast Asia • The Dutch East Indies Established • Dutch East India Company established bases on the island of Java and in the Moluccas (Spice Islands) • Expanded to dominate present-day Indonesia

The British in Burma and Malaya • Britain annexed Burma in 1886 • Singapore grew in Malaya- profit enriched Britain • French Indochina Seized • Building an empire on SE Asian mainland • Missionaries from European countries had some success in Vietnam; France invaded to end any resistance • France took over Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia • Siam Survives (present day Thailand) • King Mongkut (mahng KOOT) studied and understood the West • Accepted unequal treaties, but never became a European colony • Modernized and hired Western experts to teach

  4. Colonial Southeast Asia • Many Chinese people migrated to SE Asia for economic opportunity • By the 1890s, Europeans controlled most of SE Asia • Changes benefited European colonizers much more than the SE Asians

The U.S. & the Philippines • 1500s- controlled by Spain; Filipinos resented the Church and resisted Spanish rule • Spanish-American War 1898 • Between Spain and the U.S. over Cuba’s attempt to gain independence from Spain • American naval officers encouraged Filipinos to declare independence; helped fight the Spanish • After the war, U.S. paid $20 million for control of the Philippines; heavily debated in the U.S. • Led by Emilio Aguinaldo, Filipinos resisted the U.S. • U.S. helped modernized and promised gradual self-rule

Western Powers Seize the Pacific Islands • 3 Regions: Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia • 1878- U.S. had an unequal treaty with Samoa • Gained extraterritoriality and a naval station • Became a triple protectorate between U.S., Germany, and Britain after rivalry increased • American sugar growers wanted the Hawaiian Islands • Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in 1898 • Supporters said it would happen anyway • By 1900, U.S., Germany, Britain, and France claimed nearly every island
