  1. Course and Student Population • Sophomore-level introductory ecology course, small liberal arts college, biology majors, 50-60 students • Course goal: to teach students how to do science while also emphasizing core ecological concepts

  2. Why is this interesting? • Ecological concepts are often difficult for students to master • Students are more comfortable with material they can memorize, but that’s not doing science • Significant class-time is spent on skills development (data interpretation, hypothesis development, experimental design)

  3. Research Question • Do critical-thinking assignments help students to understand (and retain) core ecological concepts? ? data interpretation hypothesis generation experimental design Better understanding and retention of core ecological concepts

Alignment? • Course goal: to teach students how to do science (using critical-thinking assignments) while also emphasizing core ecological concepts • Problem: Ecological concepts are challenging for students • Question: Do critical-thinking assignments help students to understand (and retain) core ecological concepts?
