19.1 Acid-Base Theories What does an acid taste like? What does a base taste like?
Acids • Compound that contains one or more Hydrogen atoms and produces Hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. • Taste tart or sour • Lemons • Vinegar
Bases • Compounds that produce Hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water. • Taste bitter – but most are hazardous - Soap - Milk of magnesia
Arrhenius Acids and Bases • Acids are hydrogen containing compounds that ionize to yield H+ in aqueous solutions. • Bases yield OH- ions in aqueous solutions. • Only the more polar bonds will ionize.
HCl + H2O → H3O+ + Cl- Hydrogen Water Hydronium Chloride Chloride Ion Ion Monoprotic Acids - HNO3 – one ionizable H Diprotic Acids H2SO4 Triprotic H3PO4
Bronsted – Lowrey Acids and Bases • Acids are Hydrogen Ion donors • Bases are Hydrogen Ion acceptors Pg 590
Lewis Acids and Bases • Acids accept a pair of electrons during a reaction • Bases donate a pair of electrons during a reaction
