  1. Science Education in the Americas Lessonsfromtheexperienceandthe role ofthe Academies

  2. The Brazilian experience • Programa ABC na Educação Científica – Mão na Massa (ABC in Science Education – Hands On Program) • Since 2001 • 4 main nucleus (Estação Ciência, CDCC, Fiocruz, and Universidade de Viçosa) • 5 national seminars (Recife, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro) • Diagnostic survey (evaluation)

  3. Role oftheBrazilianAcademyofSciences • Member of the Board of Directors • Coordination Group • General Coordinator • Secretariat • Nuclei

  4. Diagnostic Survey • The coordination group requests to Simon Schwartzman an analysis of the Program. • Paper entitled The Science Education in Brazil (A educação em ciências no Brasil) by Simon Schwartzman and Micheline Christophe. • It was submitted to discussion in the V Seminário Nacional, at Rio de Janeiro, on octobre 2009.

  5. Stimulating and enriching Initiatives, but they are • small-scale • littleinstitutionalised • poorlyfinanced • withoutintegrationwithschool systems and training ofteachers • have no systematicmechanisms for evaluationandmonitoringofresults • initiationorscientificliteracy in its initialstages; do not serve as thebasis for a more complete scientific training • do not include social sciences

  6. The nuclei complain the following issues • financial difficulties for participation in scientific meetings andseminars; • lackof a singleproject site onthe Internet. • theabsenceof a central instancethatkeepsanupdatedrecordor system for monitoringtheseinitiativesandwedidn’tevenknow, effectively, whichnucleiandinitiativesbelong in fact, to theprogrammeoftheAcademyandcan use legitimately its institutionalbrand. • thenuclei do notsendactivityreports to thecoordinationoftheprojectatthe ABC. • theexistenceofotherinitiatives, with similar ordifferent approaches.

  7. What is the best contribution that the Academy can give the process of science education in Brazil? • The Academy should have its own program of science education , as happens currently, • or supporting and stimulating a larger set of activities and initiatives in another way?

  8. Projectsthattodaycomprisethe ABC ScienceEducationProgram do it for historicalreasons, butactwith complete autonomy. • Today, ABC does nothavethemeans to monitor what is happening • hasneither financial andinstitutionalcapabilities to selectandsupportthebestinitiatives, • nor formal mechanismsbywhichotherprojectsandinstitutionscanjointhis ABC program , whatcreatesambiguoussituations.

  9. The main mission of the ABC • To discussandproposenewsolutions to scientificandsocio-economicalquestionsthatrequire a multidisciplinary approach, which is donethroughworkinggroupsandspecificstudies, • typically does not include themaintenanceof regular programmesofeducationand training, eitherdirectlyor in partnershipwithotherinstitutions.

  10. Nothing prevents, in principle, that these functions can be extended, and that the ABC could create permanent programmes for research and scientific training, as do some of its related institutions in other countries. • But this would result in institutional changes and new responsibilities whose relevance and opportunity only own institution can evaluate.

  11. SUGGESTIONS • TheAcademyshould continue to supportandstimulatethedevelopmentofscienceeducation in Brazil, in severalways. • Encourageandstimulatecontactbetweenscientistsandeducators • Estimulatescientists to participateatalleducationlevels, • Improve training andawarenessamongeducatorsabouttheimportanceofscienceeducation

  12. Sharetheexperiencesofscienceeducationatseveral countries, spreadingknowledgeandencouragingbestpractices • Stimulatethestudyofeducation in scienceandthedevelopmentofthisareaofresearch in the country • To create a standingforumwheredifferentinitiativesthatexisttodayscienceeducationcouldmeetandexchangeexperiencesandinformation. • Include sciencemuseums in the range ofinformationaboutteacher training programmes.

  13. Study Group • Need to create a StudiesGroupwith a broadscope to supportallABC'sactivities in theareaofeducation. SincetheAcademyhasbeendevelopingthemostdiverseactivitiesinvolving, amongothers, universityreform, scienceeducationatelementaryandmiddlelevel, andchildeducation. ThisStudiesGroupwould search for thearticulationoftheseimportantefforts.
