  1. G o o d O p t i o n s f o r t h e S h o t g u n E n t h u s i a s t Most hunters and sports enthusiasts that have ever handled a shotgun have their own preference – in terms of the brand, the model, and also the gauge of the gun they prefer most.It also depends on one’s favourite activity: the hunter will not necessarily use the same gun as his mate that only shoots at targets when practicing or taking part in competition when it comes to, say, skeet and trap. Not everybody always understands all the different gauges and why they are termed the way they are; however, with some experience one learns more about the differences and why you may have a preference for the one in favour of another variety of choice. It is true, however, that in a country such as the US with its many hunters and shooting enthusiasts – whether as singles or members of clubs – there will always be an interest in the different firearms such as rifles, handguns and shotguns, for example. Also, preference will dictate how to find the best firearm for bird hunting, deer hunting or target shooting. A lot depends on, for example, the gauge that users prefer – and why certain gauges may be more preferable than others. The 12 and 20 gauges have always been the most popular among American hunters and sports enthusiasts, also because of the versatility they offer.

  2. The 12 gauge, for example, is used under various circumstances, and among hunters and sportspeople, it remains a popular choice. But, so is the 20 gauge, which is also popular among shotgun enthusiasts who enjoy hunting birds such as turkey, grouse, quail and other forms of the game – also deer, because it can fire different ammunition right from buckshot to slugs. Some people also refer to it as the “20 bore” much like one would talk about a 12 bore etc. The 20 gauge is very often favored by beginners to practice target shooting and those that hunt small game. Also, because it offers less recoil than, say, the 12 and 10 gauge, it is preferred by less experienced hunters and shooters, or by those who prefer less recoil, especially over prolonged periods on the range or in the field. Many women, for example, find the 20 gauge more suitable – and so do younger hunters such as teenagers, for example, and likewise much older ones too. It can be used by many individuals under many different circumstances and will always enjoy its own following. Also, there are so many brands and different models available that the 20 gauge will most likely remain among the top shotguns as it has done for a very long time. Whether to use the 20 or 12 gauge, for example, often leads to a healthy debate. Most will agree that for recoil and easier handling, the 20 gauge is most often preferred, but the much more experienced hunter or shooter may go for the 12 because of its greater overall power which includes greater velocity to the target. Further, greater velocity means better effective range, and that, in turn, means that hunters are more likely to show greater effectiveness when they use the 12 gauge as opposed to using the 20 when aiming at geese and ducks, for example. As for specifics in terms of versatility, it is probably true that the 12 gauge may be the better option between the 12 and 20 – even though the 20 gauge is a great all-round gun. One example, for instance, would be the availability of ammunition. Most dealers will keep greater amounts meant for the 12 gauge, rather than the 20 gauge option. For many, this could be a deciding factor. The 12 gauge, also, offers better options once you start hunting turkey and deer for the greater power it offers. You also have a greater range for longer shots on other birds such as geese. Even though some may prefer the 12 over the 20 gauge for better versatility, it has to be said that both offer great qualities and features – and very often it comes down to choice.
