  1. 11/21/2011 Standards: 2 Objectives: a. Be able to figure relative lattice energies b. Be able to put + & - ions together to make molecular formulas for ionis compounds c. Be able to name more types of ionic compounds. DO NOW: 1. Which has more lattice energy and why? BeCl2 or CsBr (hints: larger charge, bigger lattice energy smaller atom, bigger lattice energy) HOMEWORK: 1. ChemThink.com - Ionic Bonding, Ionic Formulas(10 pts) Std 2 due Tu 11/29 2. Write Chemical Formulas & Name - Practice (5 pts) Std 2 ========================================================== STAMPS: Journal 11/18 1. Ch 8.4 Sec Assess, p. 231 40-44 (2pts) Std: 2 2. Ch 8 Assess, p. 237 80-84 (3 pts) Std 2 New Stamp Sheets front side 13-15 back side 16-18

  2. Lattice Energies are always given as negative numbers SIZE Smaller ion ===> more lattice energy Larger ion ===> less lattice energy CHARGE Larger (+ or -) ===> more lattice energy INDIRECT DIRECT

  3. Rules for Making Ionic CompoundsUse the oxidation # of element. For all representative elements, group # determines oxidation #. Group 1 = 1+ Group 2=2+, Gp 3=3+, Gp 6=2-, Gp 7=1- EXAMPLE: Write the correct formula with the following 2 elements: Ca & Cl 2+ 1- Ca Cl Since the charges are different you will need to use subscripts to indicate the ratio of ions in the formula -1 Step 1: Cross the charges over 2+ 1- Ca Cl Ca Cl 2+ 1- Step 2: Remove + and - signs Cl Ca ---> 1 2 Step 3: Write the completed formula, no 1's & smallest ratios CaCl2 ---

  4. 11/22/2011 Standards: 2 Objectives: a. Be able to estimate lattice energy (LE) of ionic compounds b. Be able to name ionic compounds, binary & poly anions. DO NOW: 1. Name these molecules: FeCl3 SnSO4 SnBr V(CO3)2 VCl5 VPO4 V(C2H3O2)2 2. Last night's homework problems. HOMEWORK: 1. Enjoy Thanksgiving – be grateful for your many blessings =================================================== STAMPS: Journal 11/21 1. Write Chemical Formulas & Name - Practice (5 pts) Std 2 RESPONDERS (Roman numberals for 1-6) (Click on blue dot below & to the left, for YouTube video of the presentation of the following page) http://youtu.be/nrPsChYAI9g

  5. (Link for video of this presentation, copy/paste into browser address) http://youtu.be/nrPsChYAI9g How to use Roman numberals in naming metalic compounds where metal has more than 1 positive oxidation state:

  6. Show video on different oxidation states of V before stamping - demo transition metals that have multiple oxidation states. Interactive Chalkboard Do course2-assignment-ionic-formulas.notebook 4 question quiz w responders Do Ch-08-ionic-compound.notebook 16 questions w responders
