About Polaris @RHPL • One location: • 5 Polaris servers (training, production, web, telephony, terminal) • 60 staff clients • Bookmobile connection back to terminal server • 3 instances of SIP supporting other systems that authenticate against Polaris Rochester Hills Public Library Polaris Users Group Conference 2007

Upgrade Preparation • Upgrade your training server FIRST! • Give your staff access and let them become comfortable with the software • Do appropriate staff training • Give your public users plenty of notice about downtime and positive changes coming Rochester Hills Public Library Polaris Users Group Conference 2007

Upgrade Timeline • We planned to be down for 2 full days • 4 servers, including the SQL 2005 upgrade • As it went better than anticipated, we were fully live on 3.3 at the start of day 2 • Upgrade itself depends on Polaris staff to do the work and timing depends on the size of your Polaris environment • Ours went extremely well! During the Upgrade • During the time that Polaris staff was upgrading our servers, we had: • No self-checks – extra staff computers for checkout • No E*vanced – event registration, summer reading access • No Envisionware – public computers available, just not authenticating against Polaris • No Overdrive – downloadable audiobook collection unavailable • No collecting of fines, no renewals – no access to existing patron records • No public catalog, no placing of holds – no access to web catalog – librarians used web catalog on training server for general lookup of possible location Rochester Hills Public Library Polaris Users Group Conference 2007

Upgrade Day One • Polaris upgraded our 4 remaining servers: production, web, telephony, terminal • 6 hours later, we started checking the database and testing • All looked GREAT. • We upgraded our Circulation staff clients to 3.3. • We then uploaded our offline transactions from Circulation – Patron Registrations & Checkouts • The web catalog was accessible once again also!   8. Upgrade Day Two • Brought up our 4 self-check machines connecting to 3.3 via SIP for public use • Envisionware, E*vanced, Overdrive all back up • Completed the remaining staff client upgrades • Customized web catalog for RHPL Rochester Hills Public Library Polaris Users Group Conference 2007
