Enemy Aliens • The War Measures Act was introduced by Prime Minister Robert Borden in 1914 • This gave the federal government emergency powers during wartime to do everything necessary “for the security, defence, peace, order, and welfare of Canada” What type of freedoms do you think the Government would restrict?

  3. Enemy Aliens • An Enemy Alien was a someone living in a country that is at war with his/her homeland • During World War One, recent immigrants from Germany and Austria-Hungary were treated harshly

  4. Enemy Aliens • Censorship banned the publication of books and newspapers in “enemy languages”

  5. Censorship Steps • Read the letter • Black-out all DETAILS • Names of People • Names of Places • Return the letter to the original writer

  6. Propaganda • Propaganda is information presented in such a way as to inspire and spread particular beliefs or opinions • Newspapers,Political Speeches, Posters

Propaganda • Assertion Enthusiastic or energetic statement presented as a fact, although not necessarily true • Bandwagon  An appeal to the subject to follow the crowd, to join because others are doing so • Glittering Generalities  Linking words with positive meaning to highly valued concepts in order to demand thoughtless acceptance

  9. Propaganda • Lesser of Two Evils Presenting something as the least offensive option, often to justify difficult decisions • Name Calling  The use of derogatory language or words that carry a negative connotation when describing an enemy

  10. Propaganda Assignment • Create TWO propaganda posters • One promoting Fulton as the best high school in Vernon • One suggesting students should consider other options • Use at least ONE of the propaganda techniques in EACH poster • Write a paragraph on the back of EACH poster explaining why you chose that technique and how it is effective
