  1. December 6, 2011 11 11 Daily Warm-Up:(in binders please) Na 12 11 Sodium How many protons? How many neutrons? How many electrons? Draw a Bohr diagram of sodium. 22.99

  2. 11 Na Sodium Na 22.99 11 P 12 N

  3. IONS IONS are atoms or groups of atoms with a positive or negative charge. They are written like this: Na+ Ca+2 I- O-2 How do they get this charge?

  4. IONS Atoms like to be “happy”! In order to be happy, they must have a full outer shell. Consider your sodium (Na) atom…

  5. 11 P 12 N Na NO Is this atom “happy”? This atom is not happy because its outer shell is not full! Why? How can we make him “happy”? Consider your sodium (Na) atom… It has 11 protons, 12 neutrons and 11 electrons  2, 8, 1

  6. In order to make this sodium atom “happy”, he must have a full outer shell. If this atom gives away or loses an electron, it will have a full outer shell. Na+1 or Na+ 11 P 12 N Na

  7. 11 P 12 N Na Why is it Na+1 or Na+ if it is actually losing an electron? Remember that protons never change, so when you lose an electron, you become more positive. Na+1 or Na+ POSITIVE ION Losing 1 electron gives the ion a charge of +1

  8. Is chlorine a “happy” atom? NO 17 protons, 18 neutrons, and 17 electrons  2, 8, 7 17 How can it become “happy”? Cl That’s right! It can gain an electron! 17 P 18 N Cl NEGATIVE ION Chlorine Cl-1 or Cl- 35.45 How do we write an ion that gains an electron?

  9. 10 P 10 N Ne Is neon a “happy” atom? YES Neon has its outer shell full so it has no need to add or lose electrons 10 Ne Neon STABLE ATOM 20.18 10 protons, 10 neutrons, and 10 electrons  2, 8

  10. 11 protons 11 electrons 11 protons 10 electrons Na+ Na Cl- 17 protons 18 electrons 17 protons 17 electrons Cl Review of Ions • Taking away an electron from an atom produces an ion with a positive charge • Adding an electron to an atom produces an ion with a negative charge.
