Bosnia and Herzegovina voted for independence from Yugoslavia in 1995. Large numbers of Serbs lived there. Serbia invaded to force them to stay • 1995 NATO air campaign stopped the killing. • Forced Milosevic to end war. Bosnian War 1992-1995
Srebrenica - Muslim Stronghold in Bosnia • UN tried to protect it (Dutch) • Dutch did get many women and children out • Serbs massacred over 8,000 men age 16 and up – worst since WWII • Tulza – massacre of 70 people Srebrenica and Tulza
Serbia – led by Slobodan Milošević tried to take power • Strikes and riots – called out the army • Kosovo (albanians) wanted independence • Serbs may have ethnic cleansed as much as 200,000 • 1999 – NATO air war destroyed the Serb army. • NATO peacekeepers (KFOR) (Kosovo Force) entered. • Milosevic died during trial Kosovo War 1998-1999
