What happens????......................... Excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles. It causes permanent swelling of the head. The person will have an enlarged head.
Signs & Symptoms……………….. Abnormally enlarged head Prominent forehead Bulging eyes Irritability Distended scalp veins Retardation
WHO GETS THIS??????.................... • Really anyone because you can get it at birth or anytime after birth and the elderly may develop it too.
PREVENTABLE???............... • In many cases it cannot be prevented but some cases can be avoided by preventing or treating the infectious disease that causes this condition.
HOW IS IT TREATED????............................ It’s treated by the surgical implantation of a shunt (tube) between the ventricle and the veins, heart, or abnormal peritoneal cavity to provide for drainage of the excess fluid.
HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED??......... it is diagnosed through clinical neurological evaluation and by using cranial imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance or pressure – monitoring techniques.
What is the prognosis??........... • The prognosis in this case is difficult to predict.
