  1. I Samuel 3 Samuel Is Called to Duty

  2. 1 Sam 3:1 (NKJV) • Then the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.

  3. 1 Samuel 3:2 (NKJV) And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see,

  4. 1 Samuel 3:3 (NKJV) • and before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the LORD where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down,

  5. God calls Samuel • (1 Sam 3:4 NKJV) that the LORD called Samuel. And he answered, "Here I am!"

  6. 1 Samuel 3:5 (NKJV) • So he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." And he said, "I did not call; lie down again." And he went and lay down.

  7. 1 Samuel 3:6 (NKJV) • Then the LORD called yet again, "Samuel!" So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." He answered, "I did not call, my son; lie down again."

  8. 1 Samuel 3:7 (NKJV) • (Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him.)

  9. 1 Samuel 3:7 (NKJV) • (Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him.) • “Samuel did not yet know the Lord” - He had not been accustomed to receive any revelation from him. He knew and worshipped the God of Israel; but he did not know him as communicating especial revelation of His will. Adam Clarke

  10. 1 Samuel 3:8 (NKJV) • And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. Then he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you did call me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD had called the boy.

  11. 1 Samuel 3:8 (NKJV) • And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. Then he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you did call me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD had called the boy. • Why did it take three times for Eli to figure this out? • (1 Sam 4:15 NKJV) “Eli was ninety-eight years old,” • (I Sam 3:1) And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.

  12. Next time: Answer Correctly! • (1 Sam 3:9 NKJV) Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

  13. This is Awesome! God is Calling! • (1 Sam 3:9 NKJV) Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place. • This is easy to read, but hard to imagine. • Here is a young boy being told that God is calling. • How can you answer? • How can anyone sleep?

  14. 1 Samuel 3:10 (NKJV) • Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears."

  15. 1 Samuel 3:10 (NKJV) • Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears." “A personal presence, not a mere voice, or impression upon Samuel’s mind, is here distinctly indicated. “ – Albert Barnes

  16. 1 Samuel 3:11 (NKJV) • Then the LORD said to Samuel: "Behold, I will do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.”

  17. It’s Judgment Day! • 1 Samuel 3:11 (NKJV) Then the LORD said to Samuel: "Behold, I will do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.” • (Jer 7:12 NKJV) "But go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.

  18. 1 Samuel 3:12 (NKJV) • "In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.

  19. The Day gets closer • 1 Samuel 3:12 (NKJV)"In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. • (1 Sam 2:34 NKJV) 'Now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them.

  20. 1 Samuel 3:13 (NKJV) • "For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.

  21. 1 Samuel 3:13 (NKJV) • "For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them. • So it may be that what we had in I Samuel 2 was a warning, but Eli did not respond to it.

  22. The Verdict Continues • (1 Sam 3:14 NKJV) "And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever."

  23. A Heavy Task for a Young Man • (1 Sam 3:15 NKJV) So Samuel lay down until morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision.

  24. A Heavy Task for a Young Man • (1 Sam 3:15 NKJV) So Samuel lay down until morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the vision. • So Samuel lay down until morning, but there is no mention of sleep!

  25. 1 Sam 3:16 (NKJV) • Then Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son!" And he answered, "Here I am."

  26. 1 Samuel 3:17 (NKJV) • And he said, "What is the word that the Lord spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that He said to you."

  27. 1 Samuel 3:17 (NKJV) • And he said, "What is the word that the Lord spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that He said to you." He should have known, or at least had a pretty good idea what the message was. After all, he had been told in the last chapter what was going to happen to him.

  28. 1 Samuel 3:18 NKJV) • Then Samuel told him everything, and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the LORD. Let Him do what seems good to Him."

  29. Punishment & Submission • (Lev 10:1-3 NKJV) Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. {2} So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. {3} And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke, saying: 'By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.' " So Aaron held his peace.

  30. 1 Samuel 3:19 (NKJV) • So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.

  31. Great Team Work with God! • 1 Samuel 3:19 (NKJV)So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. • “the LORD . . . let none of his words fall to the ground.” • Samuel spoke and God saw that it happened.

  32. The Result! • (1 Sam 3:20 NKJV) And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as a prophet of the LORD.

  33. 1 Sam 3:21 (NKJV) • Then the LORD appeared again in Shiloh. For the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

  34. A Special Relationship with Samuel • (1 Sam 3:21 NKJV) Then the LORD appeared again in Shiloh. For the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. • (1 Sam 3:21 NIV) The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.

  35. The Battle of Judgment • (1 Sam 4:1 NKJV) And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

  36. Aphek and Ebenezer

  37. 1 Samuel 4:2 (NKJV) • Then the Philistines put themselves in battle array against Israel. And when they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.

  38. 1 Samuel 4:3 (NKJV) • And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies."

  39. Their Ignorance is Showing! • 1 Samuel 4:3 (NKJV) And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies." • "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? it (the ark) may save us from the hand of our enemies.“ • How does that work?

  40. 1 Samuel 4:4 (NKJV) • So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

  41. 1 Samuel 4:5 (NKJV) • And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook.

  42. 1 Samuel 4:5 (NKJV) • And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook. • Someone called this over-confidence. • When you consider what they were trusting in, it certainly was.

  43. 1 Sam 4:6 (NKJV) • Now when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What does the sound of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" Then they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.

  44. (1 Sam 4:7 NKJV) • So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp!" And they said, "Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before.

  45. (1 Sam 4:7 NKJV) • So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp!" And they said, "Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before. What they didn’t realize was what the Israelites didn’t seem to understand either: God had already left Israel!

  46. The Philistines have some knowledge • (1 Sam 4:8 NKJV) "Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

  47. They are Determined • (1 Sam 4:9 NKJV) "Be strong and conduct yourselves like men, you Philistines, that you do not become servants of the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Conduct yourselves like men, and fight!"

  48. 1 Samuel 4:10 (NKJV) • So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and every man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.

  49. 1 Samuel 4:11 (NKJV) • Also the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
