Did You Know... • The first Institute in Canada was the Insurance Institute of Toronto, founded in 1899 • The Insurance Institute authors, edits, translates and prints textbooks for the GIE, CIP and FCIP programs • The Insurance Institute sets and marks over 20,000 exam papers annually • Examinations are held nationally and internationally • It has an active student body of over 20,000 • Total membership for the Insurance Institute is over 35,000 • Of this, the Chartered Insurance Professionals (CIP) Society, a division of the Insurance Institute, represents more than 15,000 graduates of the CIP and FCIP programs

Who We Are • A not-for-profit association • Over 100 salaried staff members and over 800 volunteers operating out of 19 affiliated local institutes and Chapters coast-to-coast • Programs offered in both English and French, in-class, at the work-site and on the Internet • 34,000 individual members employed in the general insurance business

What We Do • Maintain professional programs, recognised nationally and internationally • Hold qualifying examinations • Elect graduates as Chartered Insurance Professionals (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professionals (FCIP) • Promote the Institute’s curriculum, educational products and services to the financial services community in Canada

How we operate • Board of Governors for IIC and Standing Committees made up of individuals who represent all industry sectors, from all parts of Canada • Standing Committees include: • Professionals’ Council (CIP Society) • Academic Council • Staff - Institute and Chapter staff organise seminars, lunch and learns, exam times and social activities aimed at promoting the services of the Insurance Institutes

  10. Educational programs Three levels: • GIE – General Insurance Essentials • CIP – Chartered Insurance Professional • FCIP – Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional

General Insurance Essentials Target Audience: • Newcomers to the industry who have not yet made a definite insurance career commitment • Individuals employed in insurers, agency, brokers or adjuster offices in junior or support positions • Individuals re-entering the property and casualty insurance industry after a long absence

Chartered Insurance Professionals Become a CIP, the industry’s standard of excellence and professionalism. • Target audience: individuals who wish to attain the most recognised professional designation in the industry. • Goal of the program: designed to equip each graduating student with a solid level of technical expertise and is recognised in Canada and internationally • A national standard: every student writes the same examinations on the same day in December, April, and July • Benefits: program completion will entitle you to use the CIP designation as long as membership dues are paid to your local Institute and the CIP Society

Chartered Insurance Professionals • Program Choices available to each student: • Three semesters per year • 36 hours of classroom instruction per course • Distance and workplace, five-day straight session and Saturday learning periods available • On-line courses: • Ten course requirement: • Five mandatory courses • Three applied professional courses • Two electives

  14. Chartered Insurance Professionals Mandatory courses: • C11 Principles and Practice of Insurance • C12 Insurance on Property • C14 Automobile Insurance - Part 1 • C13 Insurance Against Liability – Part 1 • C16 The Business of Insurance

Chartered Insurance Professionals CIP Program Applied Professional Series – three streams: • Claims Professional Series • Underwriting Professional Series • Broker and Agent Professional Series • Three courses required – choice of nine courses Electives • Two courses Required • Choice of 27 different courses

The New Fellowship Program (FCIP) The industry’s most distinguished qualification. • Launched in September 2010, this executive leadership program is tailored to the needs of our industry and represents the pinnacle of learning in our business. • Courses are custom-designed to cover strategy, leadership, financial management, enterprise risk management and emerging issues, all from a property and casualty industry perspective. • This qualification will be seen as a requirement for leadership positions within the industry.

The New Fellowship Program (FCIP) Target Audiences:Insurance professionals who have attained their CIP designation, meet the entry requirements and/or: • wish to continue their professional development withbusiness-related courses at the university level. • want to further their knowledge at an advanced level in one of the five insurance majors, • aspire to a leadership position within an insurance organization.

The New Fellowship Program (FCIP) Goal of the Program: • The new FCIP program balances business theory with insurance context, and academic challenge with real-world application, ensuring that it will provide the strategic preparation needed for leaders in an insurance organization. • Insurance professionals with the FCIP designation are recognised as experts and authorities in a particular field of the property and casualty insurance industry.

The New Fellowship Program (FCIP) Rewards: • Professional development: You will possess the highest accreditation the Insurance Institute offers, and the most distinguished in the industry. • Portability: FCIP courses can be applied towards an undergraduate or business degree, while completing the FCIP program • Benefits: With the industry’s most distinguished credential after your name, you will send a clear message that you are ready to help guide the industry: You are Leadership Defined.

The CIP Society • The Chartered Insurance Professionals’ (CIP) Society is the professional organization representing more than 15,000 graduates of the Insurance Institute’s FCIP and CIP programs. • As a division of The Insurance Institute of Canada, the Society offers continuing professional development, information services, networking events and recognition and promotion of the designations. • Membership is restricted to Institute graduates of the CIP and FCIP programs who: • Adhere to the Institute’s Code of Ethics • Commit to lifelong learning, and • Maintain membership in good standing of a local institute and the CIP Society
