  6. Dribbling and trickery • Dribbling is invaluable in the third part of a pitch or at the wings, where most attacks take place. It creates space in tight situations where the dribbler is marked (closely guarded by a defender), and the dribbler can either score or create scoring chances after a successful dribble. • Trickerry is a movement excuted without direct ball contact in which the player faints movements with his arms, legs, hips and feet

Dribbling practice 1 Ball manipulation Key Factors • Players to move randomly around the area • Players to play with heads up to avoid each other • Players to skip • As players skip the leading foot must touch the ball before it touches the playing surface • Players to be creative in which part of both feet touches the ball • Players to be creative in movements before the touch and after the touch X X  O  O  X  O O  X O X 

Dribbling practice 2 Organisation • Area of Play – To suit age ability and number of players • Players – To play with one ball between two with player and partner in different coloured bibs • Start - Players to have a number of attempts then all of the opposition playersnow become the attackers Key Factors • Players to play with their heads up to be aware of opposition • Opponents must be passive and allow the dribbling technique to achieve success • Players with the ball to attempt the highlighted dribbling technique with assistance from their partner and their coach • Players must experiment to find their own method of carrying out the technique with an opposition player against them • Players and coach must be patient but also persist until confidence starts to show • Coach to give feedback and praise players who achieve or attempt to achieve • Defenders must be passive at all times X X O X O XO  X X 

Dribbling practice 3 OT Organisation • Area of Play – To suit age ability and number of players Start of Play • X attackers with the ball • O defenders passive to begin then active • OT target players can move along the line to receive the ball from O defenders if they can win/steal the ball • X attackers then go and retrieve the ball from OT players • Any O defender can only pressure any O attacker for a few seconds then they must switch to another attacker • At any time, the O defenders can switch with OT target players • The coach, guided by the success of the group, can switch • O players with X players Key Factors • Attacking players to play with heads up - awareness • Decision making – what angle the defender is pressurising from and how will the dribble move help • Players must think of possession/screening but must also be positive – can they trick their opponent and gain space and time • Attacking players should be allowed to experiment and use variations of the technique they are attempting • As the session progresses, allow the active defenders to try harder to win/steal the ball • If O defenders win the ball, can they dribble or pass to OT target players before switching and giving the ball back to X players X X O X O XO  X X  OT

Dribbling Practice 4   Organisation   • Area of Play – To suit age ability and number of players • 4 vs. 4 Start of Play • Service from goalkeepers with footballs available around playing area • Goalkeepers to change frequently to allow all players to attempt dribbling techniques and also restore energy • No throw-ins, players dribble in from the touchline Factors in 4 v 4 Situations • Attitude of players to dribbling now there are more passing options • Prior to receiving the ball, do players react quickly to get into good attacking positions • Movement to create space if marked closely • Body stance on receiving the ball – can the attacker see the bigger picture • Movement of other players to • create supporting angles • isolate defenders • look for secondary chances and rebounds • Encourage action with positive communication GKX X X X O O O GKO     
