2. Objectives:
The students will verbally and correctly identify all basic plant parts.
The students will have the knowledge to distinguish between the plant structures in the Shoot System and Root System.
3. Inroduction Stand and pose like a plant.
Sit and draw your favorite
flower, including parts beneath
the soil surface.
4. Introduction Today’s lesson will cover the basic structures of plants.
We will look at two systems:
Shoot-above soil.
Root-in soil.
5. Shoot System
Flower
-Used primarily for reproduction.
6. Shoot System Leaf Blade
-Used mainly for photosynthesis.
-Also used for gas exchange and transpiration.
-In some plants this can be a storage site for simple sugars and/or used for propagation of new plants.
7. Shoot System Petiole
-The vegetative growth that connects the leaf blade to the remainder of the plant.
-Acts as a pathway for H2O and nutrients to flow to the leaf from the rest of the plant.
8. Shoot System Stem
-Carries water and nutrients throughout the plant.
-Carries food to the roots.
-Some plants also exchange gases through them.
9. Shoot System Node
-The point of attachment between the stem and the petiole.
Internode
-Area between two successive nodes.
10. Root System Taproot
-The primary root that connects directly to
the shoot system.
Lateral Roots
-Also called branch and secondary roots.
