  3. Transform boundary The Hayward Fault merges with the Calaveras Fault east of San Jose Pacific Plate is moving northwest, N. American Plate is moving southeast The Hayward Fault is 40 miles long and about 8 miles deep and trends along the east side of San Francisco Bay The fault is about 200 years old

  4. Features Earthquakes Intense folding of rocks in the locked sections began forming about 12 million years ago as part of the North American/Pacific plate boundary The Hayward Fault is in nature, on streets , it cracked many sidewalks and curbs.

  5. Major Tectonic Events -1868-HaywardEarthquake The Hayward earthquake was the last large earthquake to occur on the Hayward fault zone in the San Francisco bay area. It has been estimated to be around a 6.8-7 on the Richter scale. 30 casualties were reported. This is a picture of the Alamada courthouse in San Leandro California after the Hayward earthquake.

  6. Impact of the Hayward Fault Zone -fault creep- The Hayward fault creeps at about 0.5 cm per year. Fault creeping affects the buildings on the fault, as it damages the foundation and cracks the floors of structures on the fault. This is a curb that has been cracked due to fault creeping on the Hayward fault.
