Observing the Solar System Wander-ing Stars • Ancient Greeks watched the stars move across the sky. • 5 points of light seemed to wonder among all the stars. • Greeks called objects planets meaning “wondering star.” • Later, ancient Romans gave names to the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
Observing the Solar System Greek Ideas: Earth at the Center • Greek scientists including Aristotle, thought that the Earth was at the center of the universe. • This was known as the geocentric system where Earth is at the center of the revolving planets. • A Greek scientist Ptolemy furthered the geocentric idea by adding that planets also move in smaller circles as they revolve around the Earth.
